Spanish slaughterhouses slaughtered fewer bovine, ovine, caprine, and equine animals during the first half of this year but at the same time increased those of poultry and pigs, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. The number of bovine animals slaughtered between January and June reached 1.16 million, 6.14% less than in the first half of 2024; Catalonia, with 260,446, was the leading autonomous community in terms of the number of animals received in slaughterhouses (+1.82%) and Asturias recorded the highest decrease (27,564, -13.28%). The number of ovine animals slaughtered stood at 3.69 million (-7.39%), with Castilla y León at the top (1.19 million, -12.63%) and a strong increase in the Region of Murcia (297,817, +30%) and a significant decrease in the Basque Country (26,199, -25.39%) and the Balearic Islands (61,554, -20.86%).
