The JRC MARS Bulletin for September 2025 confirms that drought and recurring heatwaves in Southeastern Europe over the summer have led to irreversible crop losses in Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and some areas of Turkey. Summer crops such as maize and sunflower have been most affected, with forecasts significantly below the five-year average. In other regions, heatwaves and droughts alternated with moderate and rainy periods, providing overall favorable conditions for crops. While Western and Central Europe saw mixed but stable yields, Northern Europe is expected to have above-average yields. Thanks to irrigation, the Iberian Peninsula maintains favorable crop forecasts. The overall outlook for rice is favorable: Italy, Spain, Portugal, and France show high yield potential, while Southern Spain, Bulgaria, Romania, and Greece have average to poor forecasts.
