Protecting animals is also protecting people. On July 6, World Zoonosis Day is commemorated because 140 years ago Louis Pasteur successfully applied the first rabies vaccine to a dog. Today it is proven that preventive methods such as vaccination continue to be the most effective for protecting animals and people against these diseases. Zoonoses are diseases transmitted from animals to humans and currently represent more than 60% of human infectious diseases and nearly 75% of emerging diseases. Most originate in domestic or wild animals, but production animals such as cattle, pigs, and poultry are a key piece in this complex health framework.
