Livestock production in the Magallanes Region experienced significant growth in May 2025, according to the latest bulletin from the National Statistics Institute (INE). The joint slaughter of sheep and cattle increased by 94.6% compared to the same month of the previous year. This strong increase was mainly explained by the rise in sheep slaughter, which reached 36,390 heads, marking a year-on-year increase of 102.2%. Within this species, lambs stood out with an increase of 235.2%, reaching a participation of 38.3%. They were followed by ewes (47% of the total), which grew by 46.8%, and wethers, with an increase of 253.7%. In the case of cattle, slaughter increased by 23.8%. The category with the highest participation was steers, with 40.1%, although this showed a decrease of 11.2%. In contrast, cows grew by 187.6% and represented 30.8% of the total.
