Vietnamese pangasius prices hit record highs, driven by Chinese market demand

The Vietnamese pangasius market has seen price fluctuations, with large-sized pangasius reaching a two-year high in 2025. This is due to a decline in supply caused by a high fry survival rate and reduced fish egg numbers, alongside an increase in the price of adult fish. Demand in the Chinese market for large-sized pangasius has also risen, leading to an adjustment in prices by farmers and potential delays in delivery. Additionally, breeding costs and a decrease in global supply are contributing factors. The US ban on Russian seafood and rebound in demand in the European market have also impacted basa fish prices.

Recently, the Vietnamese pangasius market has experienced significant price fluctuations. Entering 2025, the price of pangasius has reached the highest level in nearly two years. According to reports, in late December 2024 and early January 2025, the prices of pangasius in various provinces of Vietnam continued to rise, especially in the field of large-sized pangasius (weighing more than 1.1 kg), the price reached a record level. The price of large-sized pangasius in the four major breeding provinces of Dong Thap, An Giang, Hau Giang and Tien Giang in Vietnam has risen significantly, among which the prices in An Giang and Dong Thap provinces have risen to about US$1.26 per kilogram (ie 33,000 VND and 31,500 VND) respectively.
