In the Crop Production report released by the USDA on August 12, the forecast for the U.S. wheat crop was updated, reducing the estimate for the total U.S. wheat production by an additional 163 thousand tons, so the expected result will be approximately 41.67 million tons. This is the lowest crop volume seen since 1970. The current downward adjustment can be explained primarily by the reduction in expectations for the hard red winter wheat (HRW) and durum wheat crops. The low yield this year is due partly to the smaller planting area and partly to the extensive drought in the Great Plains states. Why was the wheat acreage so small? As already indicated in this article, the acreage of corn and soybeans increased by approximately half a million hectares on the farms, as farmers hoped for more profit from these two crops.
