The wholesale price of fresh limes in Brazil has experienced a significant decline, dropping by 64.28% month-on-month (MoM) from an average of USD 0.42 per kilogram (kg) in Nov-23 to USD 0.15/kg in Dec-23. The price trend decreased from the highest recorded price of USD 0.59/kg in Aug-23, and it remained below the price levels observed in the same period of 2022 from Sep-23 to Dec-23.
The decrease in lime prices can be due to an increased supply of the fruit. Furthermore, the hot weather conditions directly impacted the crop, resulting in smaller fruits. This size reduction diminished their appeal in domestic and export markets, contributing to the decline in lime prices.
Brazil's fruit exports of lemons and limes in Oct-23 decreased by USD 646 thousand, a 7.38% YoY decrease from USD 8.76 million to USD 8.12 million, with a notable decline in exports to Germany, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Oman. On the other hand, imports increased by USD 165 thousand, a 98.2% YoY, primarily driven by higher imports from various countries. Key export destinations for lemons and limes included the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Chile, Argentina, and Germany, while major sources for imports were Uruguay, Argentina, and the United States. This resulted in a positive trade balance of USD 7.78 million.
