Spain’s main export market of eggplants is France, with exports amounting to USD 59.8 million in 2021. Currently, the supply of Spanish eggplant in the French market is on the rise due to favorable weather.
Moreover, France can produce eggplants domestically in substantial amounts. French producers took advantage of recent sunny weather conditions and initiated eggplant campaigns earlier than usual. Producers have already carried out integrated pest management and the first eggplant campaign was harvested on May 2. The increase in supply, both from importing and domestic markets, has led to a significant drop in prices in France.
However, water availability poses a challenge, as there is limited rainfall raising the possibility of drought. Eggplant prices are likely to bounce back if both the domestic market and the Spanish market experience drier-than-usual conditions in Q2-23.
