Company Description |
Frijes Stümer, a confectioner from Hamburg, traveled to Hungary to invite pesto confectioners. In 1868, Stühmer bought a small candy store and soon his business grew into the largest chocolate factory in the country, producing high-quality steam-powered chocolate. Frederick Stühmer knew that chocolate and sweets were important consumer goods and had a great future. He played a major role in popularizing chocolate as a luxury product. From the beginning, Stühmer was highly capable and produced first-class products. In 1906, Stümer's son became the manager of the factory, modernized it with state support and founded Stümer Friesies Aktiengesellschaft. In 1941, one of Europe's most modern chocolate factories was built on Vargohid Street. As a result, 63 of his Stühmer branches were opened in Germany and 1 of his branches each in Paris and Abkhazia. Attractive on the inside as well as the outside, Stühmer's products were at the forefront of the spectacular development of Hungarian packaging in the 1920s and 30s, representing a world-class commercial culture. Cardboard sleeves and wrapping paper were designed by exemplary artisans. The success story ended with nationalization in 1948 and the factory was incorporated into the Hungarian Confectionery Company, later named the Budapest Chocolate Factory. The traditional brand was revived in 2006 when Peter Chol purchased ownership of Eger's Stümer confectionery and brand.
