3.0 FISHING BUSINESS IN TANZANIA

Indeed, it has been observed that in the world-over, fishing has been and still is a very lucrative business that, if properly managed, can recoup invested capital within short periods of time. Setting the project in the Tanzania seawaters goes with the added-advantages of fishing in waters, which are virtually virgin and quite underutilized and in waters where fish resources are in abundance.

The annual contribution of the fishing industry to Tanzania’s economy has been estimated at nearly Shs.10 Trillion, but only if appropriate measures are taken to fully

harnesses the sector’s value chain. Currently, fishing contributes only about Shs. 2 Trillion to the country’s GDP, a measly 2% of the economy, but this could easily go up by fivefold in real terms.

Increased illegal fishing, which is usually undocumented and untaxed, as well as post-harvest losses that are estimated to be up to 70%, have been identified as major challenges that play havoc with the sector.

3.1 THE FISHING INDUSTRY AND TECHNICAL ASPECTS

Fish Availability in Tanzania Seawaters

There should not be any doubt on fish availability in the Tanzania seawaters. The marine waters that cover about 223,000 Square Kms of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and another 64,000 Square Kms of territorial waters, have the potential of about

600,000 metric tons and over 1,200,000 metric tons of marine resources within the EEZ and territorial waters respectively.

Mismanagement of marine resources has become a worldwide phenomenon, resulting in over exploitation of resources by scrupulous fishermen, but this Study have unearthed a very favorable situation in Tanzania where the Fishery Division has enforced a management discipline in utilization of fishing grounds that avoids conflicting interests among artisanal/small fishermen, medium and large-scale fishermen.

3.2 Fish Sales & Marketing

While the worldwide demand of fishery products is geometrically on the increase, supply is however relatively low, depicting that whatever is harvested, would fetch a ready-market, as fish is the main source of animal proteins. Abajuko Enterprises is geared to harvest as much as possible to feed the nation and overseas market.

4.0 OUR DISTINCTIVE SERVICES Abajuko has various departments whereby fish is selected, processed, stored and ultimately packed ready for delivery: - Packaging A specialty of our service is the thermal protection of product before delivery.
