Thailand is the world’s biggest exporter of tamarind. Its major exporting markets include China, Japan, the Philippines, Pakistan, Canada, the European Union, and the United States. Thai exports of tamarind, especially of the fresh kind have seen a substantial increase in the past couple of years. While exports, in general, faltered slightly in 2018-2019 for both fresh and dried tamarinds, Thai exports of HS Code 081090 fresh tamarinds, etc, saw an increase of 123% during that period. Tamarind in particular is high in demand in Southeast Asian markets, in which Thai tamarinds have taken up approximately 20% of the market share in Indonesia, partly attributed to the increase in the supply of tamarind drinks. This report addresses an exports & imports landscape of tamarind with a focus on Thailand.
