Cloves, known for being an expensive and rare spice, have traditionally been highly cultivated in Zanzibar, Tanzania. In past years, the spice was exclusively sold through the Zanzibar State Trading Corporation (ZSTC), making cloves a significant income crop for the country. In the 2023 season, the government introduced changes, permitting the open sale and export of cloves. This decision was driven by challenges in securing reliable customers through the traditional board system. Presently, cloves are accessible in mainland Tanzania, primarily from the Morogoro and Tanga regions. This shift in availability follows the Zanzibar season.
