Wheat flour: 80,000 tons exported to Bolivia

Bolivia is facing a significant shortage of wheat flour, with the country expected to import 80,000 tons this year to support the baking and food production sectors. This decision was made following the loss of 70% of the country's wheat production due to the climate crisis. To facilitate imports and ensure affordability, the government has removed import tariffs on wheat or flour until the end of its current administration. The government also highlighted that the flour shortage claims are exaggerated and assured that the baking sector will have a steady supply of flour, along with low-priced sugar, to maintain the set bread price of Bs 0.50 per unit and 60 grams throughout this administration.

This Monday, the Vice Minister of Commerce and Internal Logistics, Grover Lacoa, confirmed that the country will import 80,000 tons of wheat flour this year in order to guarantee the supply not only to the baking sector, but also to others who are dedicated to food production. "We are importing directly through Insumos Bolivia 60,000 tons and 20,000 with the private sector; we have made contact with the eastern milling sector with the industries that reside in that department to take similar measures and guarantee the supply of wheat not only to the baking sector, but also to the pasta, noodle, and cookie manufacturing sector," Lacoa said.
