Uruguay: Mandarin leads in surface area but orange in production

The "Spring 2024" Citrus Survey in Uruguay revealed that the country's citrus production for the 2024 harvest reaches 305 thousand tons, with orange, mandarin, lemon, and grapefruit being the main species. As of December 2024, 92% of the production had been harvested, with orange and lemon being the remaining. Mandarin was the largest occupier of the citrus area, followed by orange for production. The average yields ranged from 8.2 to 32.8 tons per hectare. Twenty-eight point six percent of the total citrus production was exported as fresh fruit, primarily mandarin and orange, while lemon was the species with the lowest proportion of fresh fruit exports but had the highest industrial destination.

The “Spring 2024” Citrus Survey in Uruguay showed that the production of the 2024 harvest -accumulating the four most important species in the country: orange, mandarin, lemon and grapefruit-, reached 305 thousand tons. The Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries of Uruguay, through the Office of Agricultural Statistics (DIEA), reported that at the time of the survey in December 2024, 92% of citrus production had already been harvested. The two species where there was still a remnant to be harvested are orange and lemon. The entity detailed that the area of crops was estimated at 13,477 hectares, with mandarin being the species with the largest area with 5,558 hectares (41% of the total area with citrus).
