Turkey: Turbot quota increased to 529 tons

Turkey has secured a significant increase in its turbot fishing quota in the Black Sea, rising from 200 tons in 2018 to 529 tons in 2028, which represents a 60 percent share of the total quota. This increase was achieved following negotiations by Turgay Türkyılmaz, General Manager of Fisheries and Aquatic Products of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, who highlighted the importance of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean in managing the quota. The quota expansion is anticipated to benefit Turkish fishermen and increase the accessibility of turbot, a fish primarily consumed domestically, to a larger population. Additionally, the ministry is involved in turbot breeding efforts, releasing 10,000 fry into the sea annually and working on branding to improve the product's market presence.

Turgay Türkyılmaz, General Manager of Fisheries and Aquatic Products of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, reminded that Turkey was given a 200-ton turbot fishing quota in the Black Sea in 2018, and said, "As a result of our negotiations, we have ensured that Turkey reaches a quota of 529 tons, corresponding to 60 percent, this is a very serious gain."
