Syrian cottongrass should be destroyed by hand, with roots, as soon as it appears, even on roadsides - expert advice

Syrian cottongrass, a weed that is spreading in Ukraine, particularly in the Kharkiv region, has been identified by agricultural scientist Sergiy Avramenko. The weed, which is difficult to control with herbicides due to its waxy leaf coating, can significantly reduce crop yields if left unchecked. It spreads easily and is often found in areas where apiaries have previously been located. Avramenko stresses the importance of manually removing the weed, especially from accessible areas like roadsides and forest strips, to prevent it from causing widespread damage to crops.

Usually, Syrian cottongrass is widespread in the northern and western regions. In the east, in the south, it is only gaining popularity. And local farmers, most likely, underestimate its danger. I just drove into the field to look and saw this picture: Syrian cottongrass is growing on the roadside along the entire field. And I am surprised why farmers are not fighting it. After all, in this field, in the neighboring one, in all those nearby, it will be simply a disaster with this cottongrass.
