Russia: The Rosrybolovstvo Science Councils define key research priorities for 2025

In 2024, a comprehensive survey of Lake Baikal's omul stocks resulted in a finding of nearly 9 thousand tons, indicating a successful restoration effort. Additional research, funded and planned for 2025 in the Gulf of Guinea, Northwest Africa, and the western Indian Ocean, aims to further evaluate turbot flounder stocks and crab and shrimp stocks, with a goal to adjust the total allowable catch for 2025 based on the findings. The research, conducted amid concerns following the environmental incident in the Black Sea, underscores the importance of accurate data for the sustainable development of the fishing industry.

Additional studies are planned for 2025 in the areas of Northwest Africa, in the waters of the Gulf of Guinea and the western Indian Ocean. In 2024, a large-scale survey of the Baikal omul was also conducted, which covered the entire water area of Lake Baikal. According to scientists, omul stocks have reached almost 9 thousand tons, which is the result of work to restore its numbers, the continuation of which is planned until the end of 2025. With the help of additional funding, research was conducted on the Oleg Betin vessel in the Black Sea, where the first signs of restoration of turbot flounder stocks were recorded. This fish is in high demand in the south of the country. The meeting also discussed the rational exploitation of crab and shrimp stocks, as well as the state of stocks of the main commercial fish species.
