Honduras shrimp farming industry welcomes new opportunities thanks to Asian and European markets

Honduras is making strides in the shrimp farming industry with new market opportunities and support from the government. Following a dialogue with Mexico, the country has reopened its market to Honduran shrimp, providing a significant short-term boost. Furthermore, China has opened its market to Honduran white shrimp, offering duty-free export treatment and potentially providing a competitive advantage. The government is also working towards entering the Korean market and continues to support small farmers with financing at a low interest rate of 7% to aid in their development. The European Union remains a significant export market, helping to offset losses from other markets.

According to a report by Honduras's "Tribune" on the 11th, Carlos Antonio Pacheco, technical director of agricultural and animal husbandry quarantine at the Honduran National Agricultural Food Health and Safety Service (Senasa), said, "The overall situation (in shrimp farming) is changing as new market opportunities are being consolidated." Pacheco stressed that after the dialogue between the governments of Honduras and Mexico, Mexico reopened its market to Honduran shrimp, which is becoming a "key step" to restore shrimp exports in the short term. He also said that with the closure of the Taiwan market, mainland China has opened its doors to Honduras. Mainland China has about 1.4 billion residents, 60 times the population of Taiwan.
