Cusco: Progress in the Fruit Project boosts productive diversification in Pichari

The Tropical Fruit Project, initiated by the District Municipality of Pichari in the Cusco region, marked its first anniversary with substantial progress towards boosting the production of passion fruit, camu camu, pitahaya, and soursop. In its inaugural year, the project successfully produced 100,000 seedlings of these fruits, aiming to enhance productive diversification and connect farmers to new markets. The project plans to expand passion fruit cultivation across 45 hectares by September 2025, with an anticipated annual yield of 15 tons per hectare. Additionally, the project has established over two hectares for pitahaya production, benefiting 100 farmers by providing 12,000 quarterly cuttings, and has hosted more than 130 Field School sessions to enhance farmers' knowledge and investment in fruit crops.

In 2024, the production of 100,000 passion fruit, camu camu and soursop seedlings was achieved, which will strengthen productive diversification and expand access to new markets. The project aims to boost the production of passion fruit, camu camu, pitahaya and soursop, fruits with a growing demand in various markets. To date, more than 50,000 passion fruit seedlings have been distributed among the beneficiaries to be planted in the final field. By September 2025, it is expected that more than 45 hectares of passion fruit will be in production, with a projected harvest of 15 tons per year per hectare.
